They chose a lullaby, the group’s leader said, “to sing this as a song for protecting children while reflecting our suffering, sadness and wishes, all of which are conveyed in the song.” Overt discrimination against the estimated 1 million Buraku people is technically illegal in Japan, yet they remain the poorest group in Japan, and discrimination persists in employment, marriage, and other areas (Ikeda, 2001).
