This map shows votes at the district level of how delegates ratified the Constitution of 1787. The map shows the eastern U.S. from Maine to Georgia, with a map key that shows: Delegates in support of ratification, Delegates opposed to ratification, Districts evenly divided, and No returns. The map shows most delegates from seaboard or commercial farming districts (which sent many delegates to the conventions) supported the Constitution (Georgia, much of North Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut, Maine, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and the northern part of Pennsylvania) while those from sparsely represented, subsistence-oriented backcountry areas opposed it (New York, south central Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, much of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, much of South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky).
