Guiding Question 14.4

What are some of the ways we are trying to protect our fisheries?

Why You Should Care

Protecting fisheries, especially those that are overexploited, is a difficult task amid ocean waters, either those that are near-shore or those beyond national boundaries. Marine law limits regulations to near-shore areas called exclusive economic zones. These zones limit fishing to just that nation’s fishermen but may not limit fishing to sustainable levels.

To protect fisheries, there are two additional designations: marine protected areas that limit fishing for a protected species or area and marine reserves that allow no fishing at all. These offer more protection but are not very common, even in overexploited fisheries.
