Introduction:
The orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) is a deep water dwelling fish that was quickly overharvested upon rising to prominence as an economically viable seafood commodity. The life span for individuals of this species is well over 100 years and they are late to mature. Because of these life history characteristics, initial harvesting quickly decimated populations and called into question whether or not the fishery could be managed sustainably. Nevertheless, the species continues to be fished and is regularly imported to the United States. In this exercise we will examine the fishery data for this species.
