Pulitzer Prize–winning syndicated cartoonist Clay Bennett draws editorial cartoons for the Chattanooga Times Free Press. He has worked at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Fayetteville (NC) Times, and the St. Petersburg Times. Bennett lost his job at the St. Petersburg paper, he and supporters contend, because of his political views. As he notes, “Obviously, expressing your point of view can cost you your job,” a reminder that cartoons are anything but innocent fun. This cartoon appeared in 2014, after the shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. How do you imagine Americans with different sets of political convictions might respond to it? What about Americans from different ethnic backgrounds?
