Now that you have read and discussed this chapter, consider how you can apply what you have learned to your academic and personal life. The following prompts will help you reflect on chapter material and its relevance to you both now and in the future.

  1. Review the Outcomes of the College Experience box in this chapter. Although landing a lucrative career is probably high on your list of goals after college, take a look at the other possible outcomes of obtaining a college degree. List five outcomes from this box that are most relevant to you. If you think of an outcome that is not noted in the chapter, add it to your top five.
  2. College students often feel the stress of trying to balance their personal and academic lives. The ups and downs of life are inevitable, but we can control our choices and attitudes. As a first-year student, you will want to begin developing a personal strategy for bouncing back after a particularly difficult time. Your strategy should include at least three steps you can take to get back on track and move forward.
