Getting the Most from Class
Practice the behaviors of engagement. These behaviors include listening attentively, taking notes, and contributing to class discussion. Engagement also means participating in out-of-class activities without being “required” to do so.
Seek out professors who practice “active” teaching. Ask other students, your seminar instructor, and your adviser to suggest the most engaging professors.
Prepare for class before class; it is one of the simplest and most important things you can do. Read your notes from the previous class and do the assigned readings.
Go to class. A huge part of success is simply showing up. You have no chance of becoming engaged in learning if you’re not there.
Identify the different types of note taking covered in this chapter and decide which one(s) might work best for you. Compare your notes with those of another good student to make sure that you are covering the most important points.
As you review your notes before each class, make a list of any questions you have and ask both fellow students and your instructor for help. Don’t wait until just before the exam to try to find answers to your questions.
