Interests

From birth, we develop interests. These interests help shape, and might even define, our career paths. Good career exploration begins with considering what you like to do and relating that to your career choices. For example, because you enjoyed writing for your high school paper, you might be interested in writing for the college newspaper with an eye on entering a career in journalism. On the other hand, you might enroll in Psychology 101 with a great interest in human behavior and realize halfway through the course that psychology is not what you imagined and that you have no desire to become a psychologist. Because your interests are unique to you, you are the only person who should determine what you want to do in the future.

YOUR TURN > WORK TOGETHER

Work with a classmate and discuss the jobs you have had, either for pay or as a volunteer. Which of your jobs was your favorite? Which did you dislike? Be prepared to discuss your ideas in class and to offer thoughts about what your previous work experiences tell you about your preferences for work in the future.
