Activity Objective:

In this chapter, you learned about how to locate and pursue meaningful career opportunities. Obtaining employment takes drive and determination; employers will rarely approach you to offer jobs, so you will likely have to seek the positions you desire. Complete this activity to learn more about how to access job postings and prepare yourself to meet the specific needs of employers. That way, you can enter your field with a competitive advantage.

Take the following steps:

  1. Visit CareerOneStop.org or another online job search tool (such as Indeed.com) to search for job postings from real employers in your area.
  2. Use the site you’ve selected to locate actual available positions in the field that interests you most. For example, on the CareerOneStop home page, click “Job Search,” then under “Find a Job,” type in the name of the profession you are seeking and a city where you would like to search. You can change the origin of the job postings by using the drop-down menu under “Source.”
  3. Select three of the job postings you see listed. Read each posting, carefully considering the position description, the responsibilities involved, and the job requirements you’ll need to meet.
  4. Fill in the prompts below with the information you discover. An example is provided.

EXAMPLE: For my job search, I looked for teaching positions in Nashville, Tennessee. My search helped me identify positions of interest at these three companies: Nashville Charter Schools, Rocketship Public Schools, and RePublic Schools.

When you have filled in all of the blanks, the “Submit” button will appear. When you are satisfied with all of your responses, select the “Submit” button to send your responses to your instructor. (Note: You will not be able to change your responses after you select “Submit.”)
