Part 1. Develop Your Career Story: Pitching Yourself
Introduction
Activity Objective:
In this chapter, you read about different ways to improve your memory and study successfully. For example, you saw that you can use mind maps to summarize and organize your thoughts. Being able to organize and summarize information is a skill that transcends the classroom, and it can be very useful as you compete for career opportunities. Complete this activity to see how mind maps can help get you one step closer to securing a position in the career field you desire.

Research
Take the following steps:
- Go online and do a quick search for “elevator speech” or “elevator pitch.” This is a memorized, thirty-second summary of who you are and how you can benefit a company or future employer. Online, you’ll find a number of resources with tips about how to create an elevator speech of your own.
- To deliver a great elevator speech, your thoughts must be clear and your points must be concise. Envision yourself as a graduate of the program you are pursuing. Use the mind map below to identify characteristics and experiences that will separate you from the pack of other applicants and that employers might find useful. (Remember: you can look back at your previous Career Story activities for ideas.) An example is provided.

- Education: bachelor’s degree in communication, 3.5 GPA, member of student government
- Characteristics: hard worker, innovative, organized
- Experiences: organized new student orientation activities, interned at Enterprise rent-a-car, wrote for the school newspaper

Story Builder
Now, use what you’ve learned on the previous slide to begin cultivating your speech. Fill in the prompts below. Don’t worry if you don’t have as much experience as you’d like; what matters is that you present the experience you do have with enthusiasm, knowledge, and demonstration of your competence. This is practice; your speech will improve as you acquire more experiences and feel more comfortable speaking about them out loud.
When you have filled in all of the blanks, the “Submit” button will appear. When you are satisfied with all of your responses, select the “Submit” button to send your responses to your instructor. (Note: You will not be able to change your responses after you select “Submit.”)
