Global particulate matter. This false-color satellite image shows global concentrations of PM2.5 in micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3) averaged over five years (2001 to 2006). In the Sahara, the Arabian Desert, and interior Eurasia, particulate matter arises mostly from windblown dust. In the eastern United States, Europe, eastern China, and northern India, particulate matter arises from industrial emissions.
