SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY: How do scientists study the upper atmosphere? Understanding how the atmosphere is structured, how it is changing, and how weather can be accurately forecast requires careful and precise measurements. Radiosondes (weather balloons) and satellites are two essential means of taking scientific measurements of the atmosphere.
