Tropopause and stratosphere. This photograph shows the space shuttle Endeavor against the backdrop of two layers of the atmosphere, seen edge-on. From this perspective, the nose tip of the shuttle appears to be touching the tropopause, but the space shuttle is far above the tropopause. The clear air of the stratosphere appears blue. Suspended aerosols and pollutants give the troposphere its reddish-brown color.
