Europe’s Year without a Summer. This reconstruction of summer temperatures (in degrees Celsius departure from today’s average) for Europe in 1816 comes mostly from tree ring analysis. The cooling in the Northern Hemisphere lagged the Tambora eruption by a year because it took several months for the volcanic aerosols to circulate in the upper atmosphere and cool Earth’s surface.
