Mono Lake levels. (A) By the early 1980s, some 30% of Mono Lake’s volume had been lost due to water diversions to Los Angeles. Mono Lake faced the same fate as the Aral Sea and Owens Lake. (B) Mono Lake is about 20 km (13 mi) across at its widest. The white ring surrounding the lake is the exposed lake bed, indicating the height of the lake before water diversions.
