Spring and neap tides. The highest tides, called spring tides, occur when Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are aligned along the same axis (shown as a dotted line). Spring tides occur during a full moon or during a new moon. The lowest tides, called neap tides, occur when the Moon is in half-phase and at a right angle to the line between Earth and the Sun.
