Lightning safety. When outdoors, avoid being near the highest point on the landscape, such as on a mountain pass (1), in a boat on flat water, on a golf course (2) or soccer field, or under a single tall tree (3). When indoors, avoid materials that conduct electricity, such as landline phones, electrical appliances, computers (4), and running water. If caught outdoors in a forest, seek shelter among the lowest trees (5). Remaining in a car is relatively safe (6), as lightning is likely to be conducted safely through the metal exterior and down into the ground.
