A hook echo signature. This Doppler radar reflectivity image shows the hook echo signature produced by the Greensburg, Kansas, tornado of May 4, 2007. The heaviest precipitation is shown in orange and red. Pink indicates large hail. The overall hook echo pattern reflects rotation of the mesocyclone. Usually the tornado itself cannot be detected by radar because it is too small.
