The Northwest Passage and the Northern Sea Route can offer a considerably shorter, faster, and less costly route for shipping traffic between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Before 2010, these routes were mostly covered with sea ice in summer. As the Arctic sea ice melts, however, these routes are opening up to shipping traffic.
