Greenhouse gas reduction targets for major cities. (A) The cities included here are a small sample of cities worldwide that have set goals for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions (relative to 1990 levels). Toronto, Canada, for example, has the goal of reducing its carbon emissions by 80% by the year 2050. (B) Chicago is a leader among American cities reducing carbon emissions. Planted rooftops, for example, reduce electricity use by cooling buildings in summer and warming them in winter. This planted rooftop on Chicago’s City Hall building was the first on a municipal building in the United States.
