Temperature as a limiting factor. The geographic range of the eastern phoebe (Sayornis phoebe) in winter (blue and purple areas) coincides with areas where the average January temperature is4°C (25°F) or warmer (south of the black line). North of this line, winter temperatures are too cold for the eastern phoebe. The bird moves north into the brown range during summer.
