Solar energy in the biosphere. Plants convert radiant energy from the Sun to chemical energy, which they use for growth. The keel-billed toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), whose range is from southern Mexico to Venezuela (inset map), will acquire chemical energy directly from the plant in the form of berries or indirectly as it eats insects that eat the plants.
