Adopting a Success Attitude

PERSISTING IN THE FACE OF OBSTACLES

As you put your academic and career plans into action, what obstacles might you encounter? For example, might you have difficulty fulfilling the requirements for completing your chosen degree? Might you identify a career that would be perfect for you — only to discover that by the time you graduate, few job opportunities will be available in that career? Identify three potential obstacles. Then, for each one, answer the following questions:

  1. What strengths do you have that will help you overcome this obstacle?

  2. How might you prevent this obstacle from becoming so overwhelming that you give up? For example, what could you say to yourself to stay hopeful and positive?

  3. Who can support you or help you get past this obstacle? How?

  4. What campus resources could help you deal with this obstacle? How, specifically, will you connect with these resources? For example, is there a campus career center that you plan to visit? If so, where is it located, what are its hours of operation, and what do you want to discuss during your visit?
