Applying Your Skills

IMPROVING YOUR NOTE-TAKING SKILLS

Select a note-taking method described in this chapter (outlining, the Cornell system, mapping, or charting) that you haven’t used before but would like to try. During the next week, use this method in a specific class to take notes during lecture, for reading assignments, or both. After each note-taking session, review your work within twenty-four hours and respond to the following questions:

  • Question 7.12

What are the main ideas of the lecture or reading you took notes on? What material was unclear? What questions do you have? (Talk with your instructor to clarify any confusing concepts.)

  • Question 7.13

Overall, what did you like about this note-taking method? What challenges did you encounter?

  • Question 7.14

Will you continue to use this method? Why or why not? If not, what other method will you try instead?
