Journal Entry:
Setting Short- and Long-term Goals
Both long- and short-term goals play a role in helping you achieve what you care about. Having a clear and specific long-term goal can keep you headed in the right direction while you’re in school, and it can provide you with a sense of purpose and meaning. Short-term goals are the stepping stones to long-term goals: They help us organize our actions and provide us with day-to-day momentum as we work toward our long-term objectives.
In this exercise, you’ll have the chance to reflect on a long-term goal that’s important to you, as well as the short-term goals that support it. Write a journal entry in which you respond to the following questions:
-
What is your long-term goal when it comes to your college education? What do you hope to accomplish with a college degree? Be as specific as you can.
-
Break your long-term goal into smaller objectives. Reflect on what you’ll need to do each term to be ready to achieve your long-term goal when graduation comes. In addition to coursework, think about additional knowledge, skills, training, and experiences you could develop along the way.
-
Describe how achieving each of these short-term goals will help you meet your long-term goal. Why are these smaller goals important to your overall objective?
