Journal Entry:
Working Through Test Anxiety
As you read in this chapter, many students experience nervousness or worry (test anxiety) before or during an exam. Have you ever experienced test anxiety?
If your answer is “yes,” try to think about a specific experience and then reflect on the following questions in a journal entry:
-
What type of test caused you the anxiety?
-
What feelings did you have about the test and your preparation for the test? How did your body experience the anxiety? For example, did you have trouble sleeping, eating, or concentrating?
-
Did you engage in any negative self-talk about the test, the content you needed to learn for the test, or your study strategies? If so, what types of things did you tell yourself?
-
Based on your reading of this chapter, give yourself three to five pieces of advice for preparing for future tests, staying healthy before the test, and managing test anxiety.
If you’ve never experienced test anxiety before, write a journal entry where you reflect on why using these questions instead:
-
Is there a certain perspective or attitude that you take regarding the nature or purpose of exams? Do you typically feel confident in your preparation for exams?
-
Describe your test preparation strategies. Do you enlist the support of anyone else in helping you prepare for exams — for example, an instructor, peer leader, or study group?
-
How do you stay healthy during the week leading up to the exam?
-
Based on your reading of this chapter, give yourself three to five pieces of advice for preparing for future tests, staying healthy before the test, and continuing to keep any test anxiety in check.
