Applying Your Skills:
Using Your Financial Resources

As you read earlier in this chapter, many types of scholarships are available to help you pay for college. Take the following steps to learn about your scholarship options:

  1. Choose two of the following sources of information, and use them to search for scholarships you could apply for if you meet the qualifications.
    • Meet with a financial aid adviser or career counselor at your college.
    • Search your college’s financial aid website.
    • Use the U.S. Department of Labor’s free online scholarship search tool. Visit CareerOneStop and search for “Scholarship Finder.”
    • Contact your employer to see if they offer any financial assistance.
    • Go to the library and search for books on college scholarships.
    • Identify state-specific scholarships. Go to your state’s website (for example, www.texas.gov) and search for “college scholarships.”
    • Inquire about scholarships through your membership in local religious, cultural, or community organizations.
    • Contact professional associations related to your field of interest and investigate any scholarship opportunities.
    • Learn more about Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) scholarships through the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, or Marines.
  2. Review the scholarship opportunities that you found. Choose one scholarship that you’d like to apply for.
  3. Record the title of the scholarship you have chosen, the application criteria, and the application instructions in the text box below. Then apply!
