Applying Your Skills:
Anticipating Essay Questions

In college, your instructors will probably tell you if an exam will include essay questions, but they likely won’t give you the exact questions in advance. So you’ll need to anticipate the types of essay questions you’ll see on the test. Let’s practice.

Pretend you’ll be taking an essay exam on this chapter. Review the chapter and your notes, looking for important concepts that could be turned into essay questions. Then, in the text box below, create six essay questions, each using one of the following verbs:

  • describe
  • summarize
  • explain
  • compare or contrast
  • critique
  • outline

To get you started, here’s an example: “Explain how the test-preparation and test-taking skills presented in this chapter can be used in the workplace.”

Now test yourself on chapter concepts by answering two of the questions you just created.
