Edward Thorndike used puzzle boxes like the one shown here in his classic learning studies with cats. The boxes varied in how difficult they were for the cats to escape from. The puzzle box was one of the easier boxes—pulling on a looped string raised the bolt to open the door. More difficult boxes required the cat to make more than one response. The results of these puzzle box experiments led Thorndike to develop the law of effect.
