Balancing summary with analysis

Writing practice: Balancing summary with analysis

You must click Submit after each text box on the page to record your work in your instructor's gradebook (if your instructor has assigned this activity). After you have clicked Submit, you may review your work (but you may not revise it) by returning to this page at any time.

Exchange your draft with a classmate. Use the following questions to evaluate the balance between summary and analysis that you see in your peer’s writing.

  • Is your classmate offering a judgment of the text that he or she is writing about or merely presenting a summary?
  • How can your classmate focus less on what the text is about and more on how the text is successful or not?

Write brief notes for your classmate and offer two or three revision suggestions. Once you receive your classmate’s comments on your draft, consider how you might revise your analysis. In the space below, develop a series of goals to guide your revision.
