Nixon’s authorization of the invasion of Cambodia in April 1970 appeared to mark a retreat from Vietnamization. The invasion led to a dramatic increase in protests within the United States. At Kent State University in Ohio on May 4, four students were killed by National Guardsmen. Just ten days later, two students were killed by police at Jackson State College in Mississippi. In a press conference statement held between the Kent State and Jackson State killings, Nixon defended his actions and addressed the antiwar movement. (6:32)
