Female Figurine, Peru, c. 1430–1532 This figurine made of gold depicts a Mamacona, who was similar to a nun in Incan society. Daughters of the nobility or young women of exceptional beauty lived in temple sanctuaries and dedicated themselves to the sun god, Inti. They served the Inca people and priests. The multicolored woolen robe and gold pin indicate this woman’s special status.
