Village of Pomeiooc, Virginia This engraving is based on a 1585 painting by John White, an early Virginia colonist. He captured the everyday lives of Indians along the Atlantic coast. His bird’s-eye image was altered slightly by Theodore De Bry and republished by William Strachey in 1618. In this Indian village, houses and sheds are grouped around an open space and surrounded by a palisade.
