Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, 1757 This painting by Nicholas Garrison shows Bethlehem sixteen years after its settlement by German Moravians. The Moravians fled religious persecution in Germany in the early 1700s and established communal societies in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Moravians pooled their labor and resources so they could sustain farms and shops, establish separate schools for their children, and missionize among local Indians.
