Colonel Guy Johnson and Karonghyontye (Captain David Hill), 1776 Benjamin West painted this portrait of Colonel Johnson, British superintendent of Indian affairs, with the Mohawk chief Karonghyontye. Johnson directed joint Mohawk and British attacks against patriots during the Revolution. His red coat and musket are combined with moccasins, a wampum belt, and an Indian blanket while Karonghyontye holds a peace pipe, representing the Mohawk-British alliance before and during the war.
