Americans Trade with China This painting by a Chinese artist c. 1800 shows the Hongs at Canton, where ships from foreign countries arrived to unload and load goods. The foreign ships were limited to this small area outside Canton’s city walls. There each nation established a trading post identified by its national flag and overseen by a Chinese merchant.
