North Carolina Emigrants, 1845 James Henry Beard, who later gained fame for his portraits of political leaders and of dogs, captures in this painting a family of poor whites hoping to find better opportunities farther west. The family was fortunate to own a cow, but the children are barefoot and the mother cradles her infant on a horse that carries all their worldly possessions.
