Shoe Shopping from Godey’s Lady’s Book In the 1830s and 1840s, women’s magazines appeared to promote new ideals of middle-class womanhood and to guide them as consumers. This 1848 image of women shopping for shoes from Godey’s Lady’s Book encouraged female outings to elegant emporiums. The lavish engravings created by Godey’s quickly made it the best-selling “ladies” magazine in the United States.
