Portrait of Loots-Tow-Oots and Wife This 1868 portrait of Pawnee warrior Loots-Tow-Oots, also known as Rattlesnake and George Esaw, reflects the dual identities carried by American Indians who served in the Civil War. While both he and his wife wear combinations of native and white clothing, Loots-Tow-Oots’s Indian feather and leggings offer an especially stark contrast to his Union uniform and cavalry sword.
