Backyard Bomb Shelter, 1951 The successful test of an atomic bomb by the Soviets in 1949 followed by the Korean War prompted many Americans to begin preparing for a possible nuclear attack. Some families like this one in Hermosa Beach, California, hired companies to build bomb shelters in the backyard of their homes.
