Journey of Reconciliation, 1947 Members of the interracial Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) embarked on a Journey of Reconciliation (known later as freedom rides) to desegregate interstate bus transportation in the Upper South. They met resistance and were arrested several times. In this photograph, some members of CORE appear in front of their lawyer’s office in Richmond, Virginia. Bayard Rustin, an important leader of the civil rights movement, stands fourth from the right.
