The Hijacking of the Achille Lauro, 1985 The Italian liner Achille Lauro was cruising from Egypt to Israel on October 7, 1985, when commandos of the Palestine Liberation Organization hijacked it. One of the 450 passengers, the wheelchair-bound, elderly Jewish American Leon Klinghoffer, was murdered and thrown overboard. After three days, Egyptian authorities negotiated an end to the terrorist hijacking. Marilyn Klinghoffer, Leon’s wife, is escorted off the ship.
