President Obama Monitors the Military Operation against Osama bin Laden On May 1, 2011, U.S. special forces attacked the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where Osama bin Laden was living, and killed him. At the same time, the president and his national security team—including, seated from left to right, Vice President Joseph Biden, President Obama, General Marshall Webb, Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates—watched the operation on a live feed from an unmanned drone flying overhead. This photograph was snapped about the time the group learned that one of the special forces helicopters had crashed. The United States, however, suffered no casualties.
