After July 4, 1776, battles between British and colonial troops intensified, but it was not until December that the patriots celebrated a major military victory. In 1777, however, the tide turned for the Continental Army even as British forces remained formidable. As it became increasingly clear that the war could continue for several years, each side sought support from women on the home front as well as men on the battlefront.
