DOCUMENT 18.1 | | | Elephant Ride at Coney Island (1911) |
By 1900 Coney Island had been transformed from a sleepy New York resort town into a busy center of commercialized leisure. Its beaches and parks drew both working- and middle-class audiences for adventure and thrills or just an escape from the city. In this photo, visitors enjoy several different attractions, including watching women take a ride on an elephant.
