Many anti-evolutionists liked to critique Darwin’s claim that humankind descended from apes. In the following cartoon, the Chicago Defender, a prominent African American newspaper, pokes fun at this argument. Although the Scopes trial was not about white supremacy, the Defender took this opportunity to comment on both evolution and southern racism.
