The following exercises provide an opportunity to use the sources collectively to respond to a guiding question.

Guiding Question: What do these five documents reveal about how whites in American society perceived and treated African Americans and about how both free and enslaved blacks resisted white prejudice and worked to carve out a place for themselves in the early Republic?
