DOCUMENT 9.1 | Auction in Chatham Square (1820)

Cities throughout the United States were hit hard by the panic, and in the first year of the crisis the number of paupers in New York City increased from 8,000 to 13,000. Widespread unemployment resulted in evictions and homelessness for thousands of families. The following image of Chatham Square in lower Manhattan, painted in 1843, reveals a common scene in urban areasthe public auction of goods from an evicted family. Artist E. Didier depicted Chatham Square as it was in 1820, the last year auctions were held there as the area became increasingly residential.
