Open the “Detail” menu and set the detail to Stage 1. Zoom to Level 2 on the drop-down zoom level menu in the upper left-hand corner.

Change the zoom and detail to Zoom Level 3 and Detail Stage 4. Then, under Filters, click on “Model Organisms” and “Characteristics.” Move the map so that you can see the tips of the plant and fungi branches. You can roll your pointer over the orange and green flags to see what each represents.

In the Filters menu, turn off the “Model Organism” and “Characteristics” filters. Set the zoom and detail levels to Zoom Level 3 and Detail Stage 8 and move the map so the amoebozoan branch is visible.

Set the zoom and detail levels to Zoom Level 3 and Detail Stage 6, then open the Periods menu and click on “Ordovician.” (It may help to toggle back and forth to deeper zoom levels and more detailed stages.)

Now go to Zoom Level 4, Detail Stage 3.

Now zoom back out to Zoom Level 2, select Detail stage 11 and look at the branches that the insect branch has resolved into. Zoom in on the insect branches on Zoom Level 5 to see all of the branches and roll over the lines to see their names. Turn on the “Characteristics” filter in the Filters menu.

Recall from the book that wings evolved independently in insects, bats, and birds. Turn off the characters filter, zoom out to Zoom Level 2 on Detail Stage 5, and look at when these groups diverged by selecting different time periods in the Periods menu.
