Sigmund Freud and Psychoanalytic Therapy At the beginning of the twentieth century, Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) developed an influential form of psychotherapy called psychoanalysis. Traditional psychoanalysis is not widely practiced today, partly because it is too lengthy and expensive. However, many of the techniques that Freud pioneered, such as free association, dream analysis, and transference, are still commonly used in different forms of psychotherapy.
